For various reasons you may find that a song on your iPhone, iPod, or iPad does not exist on the computer you are using (at work? Bad music transfer?). It used to be quite a process to get files transfered, but now there's an easy piece of software for Windows that does everything for you: Sharepod.

1. Download Sharepod.

2. Connect your iDevice.

3. Open Sharepod. (You will be asked to close iTunes if it is open).

4. Select the music you want to save to your computer.

5. Click "Copy to Computer" and select the folder you want to save the songs to.

There you go!
Problem: An Access database file has gotten large, so you decide to delete many records to reduce the file size. After doing so, however, the file size stays the same.

Solution: Compact and repair the database.

1) Go to the Office button in the upper-left.
2) Go to Manage and select "Compact and Repair Database".

Your database will now be a smaller size, sometimes even if you didn't delete any records.

To make this automatic:

1) Go to the Office button in the upper-left and click the "Access Options" button.
2) Select "Current Database" from the left-hand menu.
3) Check the box "Compact On Close" and click OK.

This post outlines how to automatically fill other fields in a form based on a selection made from a ComboBox.

1) While in Design View, select the ComboBox from which you will use to fill in the rest of the fields. All this data must exist in the same table for this method to work.

2) On the Property Sheet, select the Data tab and click the "..." button next to Row Source. The "Show Table" dialog should appear asking you which table to select from. Choose the apporiate table.

3) Drag and drop the column headers that will be used for filling in the data and save the query.

4) Go to the Format tab in the Property Sheet. Change the Column Count to the number of columns you selected in step 3. Change the Column Widths to be 1 for the column you want to be selectable from the drop down and 0 for each column you want hidden. For example, I want my first row to be the list used in the Combobox, but I listed two additional columns, so my Column Widths will look like this: 1";0";0".

The 0 values are just making the data available to use when we auto-fill later on.

5) Go to the Event tab and click on the "..." button for "After Update" and select Code Builder. This will bring up the Microsoft Visual Basic interface.

6) You shold see a section beginning with "Private Sub COMBOBOX1_AfterUpdate()". Below that and before "End Sub", type the following:

Me.[TEXT BOX] = Me.[COMBOBOX1].Column(1)

"TEXT BOX" is the label for the box you wish to fill automatically fill.
"COMBOX1" is the name of the combobox where the selection was made to fill the rest of the boxes.
"Column(1)" indicates which column from the hidden areas of COMBOBOX to fill this box with. Note that the column counts begins at 0, so above the 1 indicates the second column.

To continue, you could add another text box that automatically gets filled by typing the following:

Me.[TEXT BOX2] = Me.[COMBOBOX1].Column(2)

7) Go back to Form View and try it out. I may add some screen shots at a later time, but in the meantime, please post comment with questions for clarity.

An advantage of using this method is that it frees up the Control Source field in the Property Sheet so that any data entered and automatically filled can still be stored to a table for other reports.

One of the most common ways for offices to get a virus outbreak is through flash drives. For some reason many of the big anti-virus companies haven't tarket flash drive viruses and instead focus on web browsing and emails. Fair enough, but the flash drive solution is rather simple:

How do viruses spread through flash drives? Through a "feature" in Windows that allows software to automatically and easily run from a flash drive, CD or DVD simply by inserting it in the computer. On a more technical note, Windows looks for a file called autorun.inf that maps the execution out for the user.

The problem is that viruses can replace or create autorun.inf to run malicious programs from the flash drive. I say the tradeoff of convenience over security is not worth it, so let's disable Window's use of autorun.inf and forever be rid of the problem with flash drive viruses!

There used to be a registry script that would make this possible, but it seems the Microsoft has embraced the move to disable autorun.inf, so the solution is rather straight forward.

For very technical background info, read this page from Microsoft.

Down the middle of the page you'll see a button saying "Fix It" under the heading "Disable Autoplay". This is the one you want. Or simply click here to directly install it.

That's it! No more viruses!

To clean existing flash drives, I have found Microsoft Security Essentials to do the best job. I don't know why, but McAfee and other big anti-virus brands just don't seem to care what's on your flash drive.
KSLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06282399819697495772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2881627473320231543.post-83523328967634899832012-05-15T05:59:00.001-07:002012-05-15T05:59:07.219-07:00iPhone: Broken Mute Switch / Bypass Silent Toggle

I inherited a much-appreciated iPhone 3GS recently with the warning that it came with some minor problems, including a silent switch that didn't work.

The symptom: while it works in the "on" position, the "off" position was unreliable or irritating as it would go crazy vibrating as it contanstly switched on and off from silent.

The solution:

1) Download and install "SBSettings" from Cydia. (Oh yeah, jailbreak your iPhone first).

2) Download and install "Ringer/Silent SBSettings" from Cydia.

Now when you swipe the top of your iPhone screen, you will see a picture of a bell. This will toggle between muting and ringing.

Since the switch always worked in the "on" state, I just always leave the switch on and use the toggle to make it turn on or off. How you use this software will depend on what exactly is happening with your switch, but you'll figure out what's best for you.

The good thing about this fix is that it works for all versions of iPhones. There's rumor of an "AutoSilent" app that does wonders, but it wouldn't work on my iPhone.
KSLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06282399819697495772noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2881627473320231543.post-19715260443484687042012-05-14T14:42:00.002-07:002012-05-14T14:42:52.387-07:00Unlock iPhone 3G iOS 4.2.1 Baseband 05.15.04

I went to unlock an iPhone 3G I found on a volcano (true story) and it seemed to go without a hitch...except when I tried to actually use the phone on a network. Even though it acted like it was jailbroken and ultrasn0w unlocked it, the phone never would actually work on the network. After some research, I discovered there's a bug with baseband 05.15.04.

The fix seemed simple: while jailbreaking with Redsn0w, install the iPad baseband. The problem with this fix? The latest version of Resn0w kept crashing when trying to jailbreak with the iPad baseband. I also saw a fair share of running pineapples that didn't seem to be running anywhere and continuously rebooting Apple logos.

So after a lot of research and trial and error, it took the right combination of iOS and version of Redsn0w to work. I give you my solution:

1) Download iOS 4.2.1 IPSW here.

2) Download Redsn0w 9.6b5 here.

3) Run Resn0w 9.6b5 and select the IPSW downloaded in Step 1.

4) When asked to select your options, check "Install Cydia" and "Install iPad Baseband".

5) Continue to follow the rest of the instructions to jailbreak your iPhone.

6) Open Cydia and install ultrasn0w.

You'll be unlocked!
KSLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06282399819697495772noreply@blogger.com19tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2881627473320231543.post-13765923499996836702012-05-06T03:02:00.000-07:002012-05-10T03:21:25.653-07:00Download Anki Decks from Web/Browser

If you have ever encountered a annoying and nondescript message from Anki when trying to download a deck, give this a try. I came about it when I realized one of the offices I work in had blocked access to Anki's download repository. There are other solutions involving firewalls and anti-virus blocks, but this just gets straight to the point:

1) In your browser, go to http://anki.ichi2.net/file/search .

2) It's all a big running text file, but you can search for certain phrases. For example, I searched for "French" and scanned through the matches until I found a couple decks I wanted to try out. Here is my example:

[579, null, "HTAL French ", "A compilation of other decks as well as a few facts I've added myself. Deck is incomplete as of October 2009.", "French", 0, 3834, 475343, 976, 1256700637.820281, "6f3d2421c99cf1c28f7ea48685e92bcd.zip"]

See that "579" at the beginning? That's the important number you want to keep track of -- just use the number associated with the deck that you found.

3) Open up the web page http://anki.ichi2.net/file/get?id=579 but replace "579" in the address with the number associated with the deck you want to download. You should be prompted to download a "Get.zip" file. (NOTE: This doesn't work very well in Google Chrome, but Internet Explorer won't give you any trouble.)

4) Open the zip file. "Shared.anki" is the only file you need to concern yourself with, so download it somewhere on your computer.

5) Open Anki and click the "Import" button to select the "Shared.anki" file we just downloaded. You're set!

NOTE: Here is the error message I was receiving. It's very likely that something is just blocking the access or DNS settings need to be tweaked. I'm positive that my office has security settings in place that make it unreliable.

Problem: You get the message "The database has been placed in a state by user
on machine
that prevents it from being opened or locked" when you try to open a shared database over a network. The database can only be opened by one person while the others receive the above message.

Solution: The database should automatically open in shared mode, but network security settings may interfere with this. Try one the following:

1) Does the first person opening the database see a notification at the top that warns "Security Warning: Certain content in the database has been disabled". If so, then click on the "Options..." button, select "Enable this content" and click OK. The notifications should disappear and others should now be able to open the database, but should also Enable the content in the same manner.

To fix this in a more-permanent manner, from the "Options..." button given in the warning, click on the "Open the Trust Center" link at the bottom of the window the appears. From within the Trust Center window, go to Macro Settings (on the left) and select "Enable all macros". From now on the security warning should not appear.

2) If you do not see a security warning as describe above, the security settings could still be a problem and Access just isn't notifying you. In Access, click the Office button in the upper-left corner, select "Access Options", select "Trust Center" from the left menu, and then click the "Trust Center Settings..." button. From the Trust Center, select "Macro Settings" from the left menu and choose "Enable all macros" from the options.
3) Create a shortcut to the database by right-clicking the Access file, selecting "Send to >" and choose your Desktop. From now on, open the database from the shortcut on your desktop. Solutions #1 and #2 may still apply to this setup.
Some data imports in a spreadsheet can cause some extra spaces to appear before or after text in a cell. To clean it up, check out the Trim function built in to Excel. Trim removes any extra spaces besides the spaces between each word.

1) Create a new column next to the data you wish to trim. (Unfortunately you can't apply to Trim directly over the top of the current text).

2) Click the Function (Fx) button next the text box where you input data.

3) In the "Or select a category:" drop-down, select "Text".

4) Find Trim from the bottom list and click OK.

5) Click on the cell that you wish to clean up.

6) Apply to any other cells or columns you wish to clean up.

7) Copy the data and paste the values over the original cells. Voila!
KSLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06282399819697495772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2881627473320231543.post-35672456010128201972012-04-01T07:41:00.003-07:002012-04-18T04:29:27.249-07:00How to Read Skype Chat History

Two points first:

1) You can read the history from within Skype by opening up a chat window for a contact and clicking on the links near the top of the chat window that indicate how far back to display conversations.

2) The Skype log files are located here: c:\users\username<username><user name="" screen="">\AppData\Roaming</user></username>

Okay, now to read Skype history without having Skype open (and you must have Skype closed to unlock the files), try using this free software:

SkypeLogView

Very simple.
KSLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06282399819697495772noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2881627473320231543.post-55510195154105927242012-02-09T02:23:00.000-08:002012-04-26T02:35:23.463-07:00iPhone Screen Will Not Rotate On Its Side (Landscape Orientation)

Before trying these steps, make sure that you have restarted your iPhone. Also note that some apps do not allow for the screen to sideways and therefore will never change to landscape orientation. But if nothing (pictures, web pages, etc.) will never rotate, then try these steps:

1) Double-tap the home button (black button at the bottom center of your iPhone) until a menu of apps appears as a bottom row on your screen.

2) Swipe the row to the left. You will see iPod controls plus at the left-most side an icon with a clockwise-pointing arrow.

3) If this arrow circle has a lock in the center of it, then it means your landscape mode is locked. Tap it to unlock it.

KSLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06282399819697495772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2881627473320231543.post-36572996089082228662012-01-19T06:26:00.000-08:002012-02-04T03:44:05.109-08:00Disable Subscribers on Facebook

When Facebook rolled out the subscription services, I immediately approved it while not knowing exactly what would change. I learned it allowed non-friends to subscribe to my updates, even when I didn't accept their friend requests. Having no need for this, I wanted to disable it, but nowhere in the account or privacy settings could I find the section on subscriptions. Here's how to prevent people from subscribing to your content:

1) Go to your profile (not the newsfeed, your actual profile page that someone sees to learn about you).

2) Click on "Subscribers" on the left-hand menu.

3) On the page that opens up, you should see a button "Edit Settings" in the upper-right. Click it.

4) In the first section "Subscribers" change the drop-down option from "On" to "Off".

There you go!

UPDATE: For the new time line, you'll find "Subscribers" under the down-arrow menu to the right of your name at the top of your profile (and just below your cover photo).
KSLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06282399819697495772noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2881627473320231543.post-45474950645820146492011-11-10T09:56:00.000-08:002011-11-10T09:56:57.874-08:00iPhone Stopped Vibrating

One day my iPhone 3G made a funny noise when it started to vibrate. It sounded like the motor died mid-vibration. I thought this was the end of my old phone and I was going to be forced to purchase the latest and greatest model, which unfortunately is a problem since I need an unlocked phone for where I live.

But I was able to revive it! I read online about placing the phone face-down and tapping the back -- not hard, but enough to shake it up a little. It didn't work, so I tried focusing on different parts of the phone. It seems the best location to tap is on the spot two icons from the bottom right of the screen (but on the backside of the phone). Basically, put the phone face-down and aim for that spot in the lower-left of the backside.

It worked for me! It started vibrating, then stopped again. I had to tap it a couple more times before it would continue working without me having to tap it any longer. I imagine there's a piece of plastic or a seal floating around in there now, but I'm happy with extending the function for a bit longer.
KSLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06282399819697495772noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2881627473320231543.post-17132405948876127592011-11-04T04:20:00.000-07:002011-11-04T04:20:29.053-07:00iPhone - Nobody Can Hear Me!

One day my very old iPhone 3G seemed to give its last breath when one day people were unable to hear me on a call, though I could hear them just fine. I figured the phone was just too old and the time had some to upgrade. Just to be safe, I scoured the internet and found a bug related to the iPod app, so I gave it a try and it worked!

Many forums online say it happens when the headphones are suddenly unplugged during the middle of a song, but I couldn't recall such an incident since I don't listen to a lot of music on my iPhone.

The fix:

1) Start the iPod app.
2) Play a song.
3) Stop the song.
4) Close the iPod app.
5) Restart the iPhone.

That worked for me and I haven't had any problems since! If this doesn't work, then try updating everything through iTunes. A workaround is to just use the hands-free cable until you can get a new phone. Some shops are able to fix hardware issues, but you need to weigh the costs vs. getting a new phone.
KSLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06282399819697495772noreply@blogger.com47tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2881627473320231543.post-87678834047030838972011-03-05T02:30:00.000-08:002011-03-05T02:30:47.684-08:00Skype: Remove Skype Links from Web Browser
When you browse the web, Skype will locate phone numbers and offer to let you call the phones through Skype. You have two options to disable this:

1) Uninstall "Skype Toolbar" from Add/Remove Programs.

2) In Skype, go to Tools > Options > Advanced and uncheck the boxes "Use Skype to call callto: links on the web" and "Automatically start Extras".

I recommend just getting rid of the toolbar, which often are culprits when web browsers crash.

KSLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06282399819697495772noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2881627473320231543.post-88386499955465059982011-03-05T02:23:00.000-08:002011-03-05T02:23:59.889-08:00Skype Slowness Issues
Problem: whenever Skype opens, the computer slows down significantly.

Solution (possibly): I have seen some version of Skype slowdown when trying to pull contacts from Outlook. Though this feature might be nice for some reason, it wasn't for me and definitely wasn't worth bring my computer to a halt. Turn off this integration by doing the following:

1. Open Skype.
2. Go to Contacts and make sure "Show Outlook Contacts" is NOT checked.

Older versions of Skype may have the "Show Outlook Contacts" option listed elsewhere, but you should upgrade to the latest version of Skype anyway. It may fix your problem without disconnecting the Skype/Outlook connection.

Other things to try: uninstall Skype Toolbar or see if your antivirus might be the culprit.
KSLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06282399819697495772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2881627473320231543.post-24769563171961971892011-03-05T01:45:00.000-08:002011-03-05T01:45:05.202-08:00Skype: "We are having problems connecting to the download server"
When you go to Skype's main page to download the latest version, you're not really downloading Skype, you're installing a downloader that manages the install of Skype. Confused yet? Anyway, sometimes the downloader has problems managing the connection and you'll get errors such as "We are having problems connecting to the download server."

Solution: Download the standalone install for Skype.

This is especially useful if you have your own download manager that can resume should the source of the problem be a slow or unreliable internet connection. Or just use it to install it on several computers that may not have an internet connection at the time.
KSLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06282399819697495772noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2881627473320231543.post-25133049020144852642011-03-04T01:52:00.000-08:002011-03-04T01:52:50.802-08:00Windows cannot find 'search:query=cmd"
Problem: you go to Start and in the search field you enter the name of some system tool (cmd, run, regedit, etc.) and you get the error "Windows cannot find 'search:query=(whatever you wish to run)". Other searches seem to run okay, as long as its not a system file.

The indexing service is running and restarting the computer doesn't seem to fix it. After much trial and error, I was able to fix the root of several problems by running this Microsoft Fixit solution: KB886549.

I only list this on my blog because the article doesn't directly claim to fix the search:query= error, so I am happy to bring it to everyone's attention.
Skype has some hidden emoticons not listed in the standard sub-menu of their chat window. The complete list can be seen here.

However, there are a couple more that have caused people to think they may have a virus or wonder why exactly they are seeing:

1) The disappearing cat.

How to recreate it: hold down the keys C-A-T at the same time.
What happens: a gray cat holds out its paw and eventually disappears.
Why: this indicates that the typer's cat may be stepping on the keyboard.

2) The disappearing hands.

How to recreate it: hold down any three keys at the same time.
What happens: two hands appear to wrap over the top of a line on the screen and eventually disappears.
Why: this indicates the typer is probably leaning on the keyboard.

It's somewhat a mystery that Skype wouldn't let its users know what these are supposed to mean to the user.
KSLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06282399819697495772noreply@blogger.com58tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2881627473320231543.post-9841602755667165962011-02-27T04:30:00.000-08:002011-02-27T10:56:31.397-08:00Can't install Microsoft Security Essentials (Error Code 0x80070643)
Problem: You can't install Microsoft Security Essentials and get an error coder 0x80070643.

First, be sure to go through these steps.

But when I found that this didn't help, I kept digging and realized I have was having other problems including not being able to open the Management Console or searching from the start menu. Error 1606 also appeared in the event log.

That's when I came across KB886549, which addresses some registry settings pointing to user profile locations. Just run the "Fix it" button and you're set and should be able to install Microsoft Security Essentials.
KSLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06282399819697495772noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2881627473320231543.post-48164176108086189772011-01-22T23:17:00.000-08:002011-01-22T23:17:37.106-08:00Unhide Folders Hidden By a Virus
Problem: a virus reached your flash drive (maybe even your entire computer) and hid all you folders. You may even see that your folders have been replaced by a shortcut icon (one with a black arrow in the lower corner). After removing the virus, the folders can't be unhidden and the property check boxes do not respond.

Solution: Use a command prompt to change the attributes.

1) Open the command prompt by going to Start > Run and typing "cmd". A black screen will open.

2) Type attrib -s -h /S /D x:\

NOTE: x:\ should be the drive indicating your flash drive that has the hidden folders.

Open the flash drive again and your folders should now be visible again.
KSLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06282399819697495772noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2881627473320231543.post-56184338789882312692010-08-23T01:02:00.000-07:002010-08-23T01:02:46.886-07:00Outlook 2003: MAPI32.DLL errorProblem: You open Outlook and you get the following error message:

Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. MAPI32.DLL is corrupt or the wrong version. This could have been caused by installing other messaging software. Please reinstall Outlook.

Solution: For some reason, a repair installation doesn't seem to have any effect on this problem, but the solution is quite simple.

1. Browse to C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033

NOTE: For 64-bit OS, the path might be C:\Program Files(x86)\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033

2. Find the file MSMAPI.DLL and rename it to MSMAPI.OLD.

3. Open Outlook 2003 and all should be well. A new MSMAPI.DLL file should be visiable.

I've used this in Excel 2003, but it claims to work in other version:

Download Excel Password Remover 2010

When you open the file, you may get a security warning, so open Excel and go to Tools > Macro... > Security and change the level to "Low."

Open Excel Password Remover 2010 again and it will install.

To unlock, go to Tools > Unlock Workbook (or Unlock Sheet) to be able to edit the document.
KSLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06282399819697495772noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2881627473320231543.post-69036019991862327022010-03-25T10:02:00.000-07:002010-03-25T10:02:40.736-07:00Jailbroken iPhone 3.1.3 Apps CrashI jailbroke my iPhone 3G with firmware 3.1.3 and after doing so, any new apps I installed would crash when trying to open. It was frustrating to see everything close and be back on the home screen. I finally fixed it:

In iTunes, select the iPhone under the list of devices.

Go to the Applications tab and click "Sync Applications."

Click Apply.

Click Sync.

Once the Sync is complete, the apps should open. Very odd bug, indeed.KSLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06282399819697495772noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2881627473320231543.post-91808944252390331672010-03-03T15:59:00.000-08:002010-03-03T15:59:10.464-08:00Excel 2007 - How to Freeze Multiple Columns and/or Rows To freeze multiple columns in an Excel spreadsheet, click on the column to the right of the column you wish to freeze and click through the following:

View > Freeze Panes > Freeze Panes

You can do this for rows, too.

If you want both rows and columns to freeze, then click the single cell you wish to start scrolling with, and go through the same menus above. KSLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06282399819697495772noreply@blogger.com3
